Skeleton Velvet: From California Roots to Making Her Mark in Phoenix's Tattoo Scene

Written by Terrance Stone

With more than 15 years of experience, the San Jose native is bringing her original artwork, mentorship, and passion for tattooing to Arizona while continuing to build her legacy one piece at a time.

The tattoo industry has evolved tremendously over the years, but for artists like Skeleton Velvet, one thing has remained consistent: a genuine passion for the art.

Originally from San Jose, California, Skeleton Velvet is now bringing her talent to the Phoenix, Arizona area, working out of Lost Dutchman Tattoos.

With more than 15 years of experience under her belt, she has witnessed the tattoo industry transform while continuing to expand her own creative abilities. We recently had the opportunity to spend an afternoon with Skeleton Velvet, getting an inside look at her journey, the lessons she has learned, and what keeps her motivated in an industry where creativity, consistency, and individuality are everything.

From a Simple Drawing to a Lifelong Career

Every artist has a starting point, and for Skeleton Velvet, it all began with a friend who wanted one of her original drawings turned into a tattoo. That simple request would eventually become the foundation of a career lasting more than a decade and a half. Like many artists completing their first tattoo, the experience came with challenges and imperfections. But instead of feeling defeated, Skeleton Velvet remembers feeling proud of what she had accomplished.

That feeling pushed her to keep going.

She began taking tattooing more seriously, eventually becoming an apprentice under other tattoo artists to further develop her knowledge and technique. As time passed, her willingness to experiment, practice independently, and learn from those around her helped shape the artist she is today. What started with one drawing and one friend eventually turned into a professional journey filled with growth, opportunities, and valuable experiences.

Turning Experience Into Mentorship

One of the most inspiring parts of Skeleton Velvet's story is her transition from apprentice to mentor. Over the course of her career, she has helped mentor three different tattoo artists, sharing the knowledge and techniques she has developed throughout her journey. That progression speaks to her dedication to the craft. Rather than keeping everything she has learned to herself, Skeleton Velvet understands the importance of helping other creatives sharpen their abilities and discover their own artistic potential.

In an industry that has traditionally been male-dominated, her journey also represents the continued presence and contributions of women who are building their own paths. Her story shows that experience isn't just about how long you've been doing something. It's about how much you've learned, how you've grown, and what you're able to pass on to others.

Drawing Is Where the Passion Started

Long before tattooing became her profession, drawing was Skeleton Velvet's first creative passion. And even after more than 15 years in the industry, that passion remains at the center of everything she does. She takes pride in creating original designs, bringing her own imagination and artistic style into each piece. What makes her approach especially interesting is the connection she feels when someone chooses to wear one of her original drawings.

During our conversation, she explained how rewarding it is to see someone connect with a design she personally created. For her, it adds another level of responsibility and motivation to the tattooing process. Knowing that someone appreciates her artwork enough to permanently place it on their body inspires her to bring even more attention and care to the finished piece. It's a personal connection between artist, artwork, and client that goes far beyond a typical business transaction.

Creating an Experience, Not Just a Tattoo

Something that immediately stood out during our afternoon together was Skeleton Velvet's knowledge and professionalism. With years of experience comes an understanding that getting a tattoo is more than simply choosing an image and sitting in a chair.

Skeleton Velvet makes client education an important part of her process.

From explaining potential pain levels to discussing the tattoo itself and making sure her clients understand what to expect, she approaches each appointment with patience and care. She wants the people trusting her with their skin to feel comfortable, informed, and confident in their decisions. Throughout our conversation, it became obvious that tattooing is much more than a paycheck for her. It's a craft she respects, an art form she genuinely enjoys, and something she continues to take seriously after all these years.

California Roots Meet Phoenix Creativity

Relocating from California to Arizona has introduced Skeleton Velvet to a new creative environment and a growing audience.

Now working in the Phoenix area at Lost Dutchman Tattoos, she brings more than a decade of California tattoo experience and artistic influence into a different market. Her original drawings have become one of the biggest ways she separates herself creatively.

She has also developed interest around her flash tattoo sales, where clients have the opportunity to select from designs she creates. Supporters look forward to seeing what she comes up with next, and that excitement encourages her to continue exploring new ideas.

While she acknowledges how much the tattoo industry has changed throughout her career, she continues to adapt, grow, and expand her horizons. Rather than limiting herself to one artistic direction, Skeleton Velvet remains open to the different opportunities her creativity can bring.

Taking Her Talent Beyond Arizona

Phoenix may be where Skeleton Velvet is currently working, but her next chapter includes taking her artistry on the road. She shared plans to travel to New Orleans and San Francisco, expanding her reach and giving clients in different cities an opportunity to experience her work. For an artist who began by tattooing a simple drawing for a friend, being able to travel and connect with people through her work represents another exciting stage of her journey. Those interested in booking a session, exploring her latest artwork, or keeping up with her upcoming travel dates can connect with her through Instagram or her official website.

Why Skeleton Velvet Is an Artist to Watch

After spending the afternoon with Skeleton Velvet, one thing became clear: her passion for tattooing goes far beyond the needle. From her early days learning the craft to becoming a mentor and developing her own recognizable artistic approach, she has built her career around consistency, originality, and personal growth.

Her journey reflects what happens when someone takes a natural creative talent and commits years to developing it. And despite already spending more than 15 years in the industry, Skeleton Velvet continues to approach her work with the enthusiasm of someone who still has plenty more to accomplish.

As she continues establishing her presence in Phoenix while expanding into new cities, Skeleton Velvet is definitely an artist worth keeping an eye on. Whether you're searching for your next tattoo, interested in original flash designs, or simply appreciate artists who put genuine passion behind their work, she is someone you should get familiar with.
