Today would have been Nipsey Hussle’s 40th birthday, and South LA showed up in full force to honor him. We made our way to Hyde Park Station on Crenshaw and Slauson, where the community came together in a beautiful celebration of life and legacy. A highlight of the day was the release of the limited-edition Nipsey Hussle TAP card only 12,000 made. By the time we arrived, excitement had already swept the city, and both the Expo and Crenshaw stations were sold out. It was more than a birthday tribute it was a reminder of the unity, inspiration, and love Nipsey left behind.
If you planned on getting a TAP card, you had to be early, lines formed as soon as the morning started, and by 9 a.m., many locations were already packed. The Hollywood station had a line stretching out of the building, and some stations sold out before the afternoon. At the Hyde Station, it was more than just buying a card, it was a celebration. South LA legend Sheriff Drumman kept the energy high, playing Nipsey’s greatest hits for the crowd as they waited. Also at the Hyde Park Station, they will be renaming it to Nipsey Hussle Station for the next 15 days, along with a striking mural on the property, which set the tone for the day. It was a warm, welcoming environment that drew people from all over LA to Crenshaw and Slauson. Customers were allowed to purchase up to five cards each, making it a collector’s dream.
Many South LA legends came out to honor Nipsey, including the famous Cowboy Douglas, who was seen around Crenshaw & Slauson taking photos, welcoming visitors, and helping keep the environment safe. The Metro team did an incredible job ensuring everyone had a chance to get their card before they sold out. This day was a true celebration of the greatness Nipsey Hussle brought to the city, and the love for him will continue all month long especially in Crenshaw & Slauson. Whether you stop by to see the Nipsey Mural on the US Bank across the street or snap a photo under the Nipsey Hussle Station sign, the tribute is worth the visit.
